There is a castle in Amalfi with a baron. If the capital is a city, as a lord you need it to be a castle. When I took over Amalfi I got a popup saying Wrong Type of Holder in Desmesne. Taranto is a normal county but Amalfi has a city as its capital. As Salerno you have 2 ducal claims over your neighbours, Amalfi and Taranto. I discovered something today playing as the Duke of Salerno (starting 867, all dlc loaded).
